Please note that you will receive a certificate when you complete the course and you will need to upload that certificate as the first step of Salem State's online IRB application process.

The Salem State IRB offers training on the protection of human research participants for all investigators submitting protocols for review. This training is offered through the CITI Program, a web-based program for research with human participants. Directions for registration and use may be found below.

Non-SSU personnel who wish to conduct research at Salem State must provide proof of completion of the appropriate CITI program course.

The CITI social and behavioral course
Social and Behavioral Investigators includes modules chosen by the university's IRB that provide coverage of the ethical principles and procedures for conducting human subject research. Students will find specific training modules set up for their use including, but not limited to:  Students in Research, Internet Research, Research with Children, Informed Consent, and Defining Research with Human Subjects.
Federally Sponsored Research: As a condition of federal funding, this program meets the federal mandate for instruction. This training is optional for those not receiving federal funding.
Instructions for use:
  • Go to CITI Program online (Links to an external site.)

  • Create an account: Register
  • Step 1 - CITI Learner Registration: Select Your Organization Affiliation - Salem State University
    • Agree to terms of service. Continue to Step 2.
  • Step 2 - Enter name and email address. Continue to Step 3.
  • Step 3 - Create username and password. Continue to Step 4.
  • Step 4 - Select country of residence. Continue to Step 5.
  • Step 5 - CEU Credit - No. Continue to Step 6.
  • Step 6 - Provide demographic information
    • Role in Human Subjects Research - Select your status: Undergraduate Student, Graduate Student, or Principal Investigator (Faculty Only).
    • Course to Take - Basic Human Subjects - Social & Behavioral Focus. Continue to Step 7.
  • Step 7 - Select your curriculum:
    • Q.1 Human Subject Research - choose learner group: Social Behavioral Investigators
    • Q.2 Optional: for Health Sciences at instructors request
      • If your research will include the collection of private health information, you should choose CITI Health Information Privacy and Security for Students and Instructors. (otherwise leave blank)
    • Q.3 Lab Animal Safety - not applicable; leave blank
    • Q.4 Responsible Conduct in Research - not application unless NIH or NSF sponsored research; leave blank
    • Q.5 Conflict of Interest - Not applicable; leave blank
    • Q.6 Biosafety/Biosecurity - not applicable; Leave blank
  • Click Complete Registration & Finalize Registration. The Social and Behavioral course will now appear in your profile for completion. You may log in/out to complete course at your leisure.
